I have a few questions concerning Y blocks. All my other Galaxies have FE engines so I visit this site frequently for that reason. I can't get the Y blocks forever forum to come up, and I know there are some Y block experts on this site also. I have googled my question, and all the results lead to the Y block forever forum, which I can't get to come up.
1. I would like to adjust the valves on my 62 Country sedan 292 motor with the engine running. I have removed the valve covers and not much oil leaks out, so I am ok there. I just need to know the proper procedure. I have already adjusted them using the shop manual procedure, but my engine still runs rough at idle after a complete tune up and carb rebuild, so I'm worried that I may have adjusted them too tight. They are quiet, so I don't think they are too loose. I'm guessing I back them off a little at a time until they start ticking, and then slightly tighten till they just stop, but I would like to be sure, before I do it this way.
2. Does anyone know if the Y block forever forum is down? I can't get it to come up.
3. Are there any other Y block forums?
Thanks for your help with these OT questions. I appreciate it.

I had a few back then as we say.I adjusted a few customers cars at our Mobil station.I think the setting was .019 hot.I used a feeler gauge and adjusted them running, that way is the way all of us I knew then done it.You just adjust them with a slight drag as the valves are moving up and down. They should be quite but not so tight that they don't close. You need to check your compression to see which one or ones are low by being too tight. Then you can loosen one a little to see if it helps.

X2 what Bobby said. If everything else is quiet, and you can't hear them "ticking" a little bit, they're too tight.

Another thing you can do is just do one at a time with the engine off.Start with # one and as the intake valves starts to open, check the exhaust valve, the rotate the engine until the exhaust valve starts to close and adjust the intake valve, then go to the rest of them that way.The shop manual may be a little confusing especially if you balancer has slipped.

Thanks. It seems like it would be hard to get a feeler gauge in there while it is going up and down. It never dawned on me to do it that way. I'll give it a try. Thanks again.

Every one I've ever done called for .019. Also helps to idle it down as low as it will go and still run while adjusting, make it a little easier, and not so much oil mess

I can get to the site ok, but when I click on Forum, it doesn't work. Are you getting to the forum part ok? Maybe it is a problem with my antivirus software.

I went out and adjusted them like you said. They were all slightly too tight. Now it seems to idle a little better. The lifters have a slight tick to them now. I'm going to take it for a spin in a little while. Thanks for the help from everyone.

Don't forget it is different than anything later. EOIC, a bank at a time is best that way you don't get confused.

Yblocks are a different breed of cat, and frankly thought I would never own another when I traded off my 57 retractable. Actually a very good engine in many respects but with a set number of problems that were common to these engines. Upper oil passages clogging for one, and ran untill cam bearings were bad come to mind, which caused the lack of oiling to the top end. Over reving the engine will sometimes spin the cam bearing with oil passages to rockers and loss of oil to the top end also. I believe the early yblocks had softer blocks than the later blocks also. Along with the wierd cam timing setup on the timing gears and individual fitting of all crankshaft bearings these made for a unique chalenge to the uneducated. As to setting the valves and my asking about smileage ( terms of indearment of miles driven ) brings to mind another problem, wear on the rocker arms. This makes using a feeler guage almost impossible to set the rockers with. A specific tool was used in these instances called a P+G valve gapper. Hard to find, and expensive when you do find one. The company quit making these in the 60's. Basically a dial guage with an adaptor to mount on the valve. Mkes an exact setting of the rocker easy. What I have to say about the valves in these engines Is related to a recent head rebuild I had done. I took 6 heads to the shohp and had them rebuild the best set. In the process they could not find a complete set of good valve springs for two heads out of the six heads. Also, three of the valves were burned in the original set I took off the engine and it would still run. Three of those valves had huge pieces burned away. One a quarter inch wide and just as deep. Just wondering about the condition of the heads on yours, thus smileage. These heads were not meant to run on unleaded gas. One other frequent problem with these engines, is that if it backfires even once you most likely blew the economizer valve. Easy to check, take carb off and uscrew the cap, if there is gas in the cap then you need to replace the valve or it will never idle right.
