What makes LBG shine is definitely the rapid fire, without it the gun feels boring and painfully slow, but with it you actually feel like you're doing something. Looking forward to trying out some different ones!

Chaotic Gore Magala HBG is the king of raw bowguns right now. While it has one less clip size than Scorned Magnamalo's HBG, it has 50% affinity when overcoming the frenzy, which is around 90% uptime with bloodlust. Natural affinity is great because with pierce you won't always be hitting weak zones to proc WEX.

The Longsword IS the best weapon in Monster Hunter Rise full stop and Sunbreak didn't change that. It's not the easiest for new players but is devastating once you master it.

The Sword and Shield and Long Sword are great starting points for newer players. Veterens can jump right into the Switch Axe, Charge Blade, and Light Bowgun to output some serious damage.

Depending on what LBG or HBG you choose, it will be easier for you getting the elemental knockdown and usually LBG with the respective elemental ammo to counter Alatreon's weakness will be the king here. While HBG can do it too, it needs a bit more elemental damage output, which is tied to Safi's set bonus mostly.

As to which is better, well, when it comes to kill times, HBG is the clear winner. I still personally prefer the LBG (mobility and mines), but objectively speaking, the HBG is better.

Rathalos weaknesses and resistances

You probably won't have access to it when you are at this stage of the game, but should you somehow be able to wield dragon weapons, they're the most effective against Rathalos. Failing that, thunder weapons are your best option, while both water and ice do little damage.

EVEN if you don't enjoy the base MHR, Sunbreak is definitely worth it. It fixes so many issues with the base game and adds more. It converts many people (including me) who initially hated Rise into loving it. If you decide to ignore Sunbreak just because you don't enjoy base Rise, you are missing alot.

For base Rise, Nargacuga's is probably the best overall. Once you hit Sunbreak, it's going to drop off hard. The best light bowgun is to load your ammo, see it fired before you, and hear the lamentations of the monsters they hit.
