Quinton Jefferson did not participate in OTAs.

They weren't gonna put the rookie in front of him.

I am pretty sure they lined up Hurst at LE 37 times and RE 19 times. He averaged about 25 snaps a game and he did line up a DRT later in the season. I am not sure why you think Maurice's role is limited to one position. He spent more than 40% of his time not playing his traditional position. I think back to that Denver game and Tomlinson was horrible and I think Hurst was playing same position as Tomlinson that game and was much better. I will have to go back and watch the tape but I think you really are pigeon hole'ing him. I seem to remember him moving around more than anyone else at the DT position but i could be wrong.

Per PFF, Hurst played over the tackle 54 times, on the edge 2.

He played 211 snaps in the B gap and 9 in the A gap. That's 20% rather than 40, but that's a significant amount.

    Quinton Jefferson

    A gap - 22

    B gap - 252

    Over the tackle - 240

    Edge - 19

52% on the interior, 48% on the edge. This is why I made the comparison to Arik Armstead. Armstead also plays up and down the line. If the Browns want to deploy a 50 front again this year, Jefferson can line up over the guard or outside.

Maybe. I thought maybe Shelby Harris was.

I'm not sure your point. To me,that's a good thing. #4 #5 WR get, what, MAYBE 3 or 4 looks a game? DT much more physical position, rather have 2 DT's in reserve for following week(s) than a #6 WR.

Maurice Hurst played 302 snaps on defense last year. Nick Harris played 311 on offense. How many will Hurst have if he's now inactive for games?

Meanwhile, the Browns have to split up the 406 offensive snaps Harrison Bryant had last year. Jordan Akins, who had 231, might see an uptick in usage, but it likely will be marginal. So those Bryant snaps are likely going to receivers and maybe a portion will go to running backs. That's before considering that David Bell and Marquise Goodwin combined for 339. Hell, James Proche got 59 reps in that exhibition game against the Bengals.

    Amari Cooper - 883

    Elijah Moore - 903

    Cedric Tillman - 609

    DPJ - 439

Yes, Jerry Jeudy will get plenty of reps, but they clearly need six guys, especially if they plan to spread teams out and utilize more four wide receiver looks.

This is all before considering the offense should be better. Fewer 3-and-outs. That would mean even more offensive snaps.

You can slice it anyway you want, but I'd put money on it that Hurst is on the opening day roster, and not only that, on the field and making key plays on defense.

    Exactly.

Sometimes people get too caught up in roster numbers, and can't see the forest through the trees.

If the Browns are serious about a big run this year and acknowledge that the D is the strength of the team, then I don't see how they'd release a healthy Hurst over the magic of converting a Polynesian pineapple into a shark. Or even a hard-shelled sea turtle.

You mention two good points, Pete: "The best way to beat the Browns defense is to run the ball affectively"; "If the Browns were to employ a 50 defense again this year...". These ideas can be tied together for a more sensible result instead of getting rid of arguably at least our best DT, Hurst.

For stronger run defense employ a 5-1 such as we used at times last year successfully . A 3-0-3 or 4i-0-4i interior(using any combination from our 10 DLs)should work well with our best players, including Hurst. A-1 tech and 3-tech interior isn't God's Defense.

For something that you claim keeps happening you have to have at least one example.

The Browns are paying Jordan Hicks $4.5 million this season. Jim Schwartz brought him in specifically to be his MIKE.
